Position Summary

The Associate Athletic Director for Business (Athletics Chief Financial Officer) is responsible for managing the Sacramento State Division I Intercollegiate Athletics budget totaling ~$21M ($10M Student Fees, $5M general funds, $2M NCAA/conferences, and ~$4M from sponsorships, fundraising, camps and other sources).  The Athletics CFO reports to the Director of Athletics (AD) as part of the senior leadership team. The incumbent will work in a self-supervisory nature and provide leadership to the Athletics Business Office staff as well as provides assigned sports supervision.

The Athletics CFO leads executive/senior staff and head coaches in the development the annual Athletics budget and provides administrative responsibility for the financial and budgetary operations of Sacramento State Intercollegiate Athletics, in accordance with the policies of Intercollegiate Athletics, Sacramento State, the California State University System, affiliated conferences (i.e. Big Sky Conference, Big West Conference, Western Athletic Conference & American Athletic Conference) and NCAA.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $ 4,583.00 - $ 13,750.00 per month 

Hiring Range: $ 4,583.00 - $ 10,000.00 per month, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

The program of intercollegiate athletics is organized and conducted as an integral part of the total educational program of the University. Academic excellence and athletic accomplishments go hand in hand at Sacramento State. There are three separate and unique missions in this program: to contribute to the educational objectives of the University; to provide a healthy, competitive athletic experience to individual student-athletes; to serve as a public relations vehicle within the community.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics offers both academic courses and an intercollegiate athletics program. Academic courses offer the opportunity for individuals to gain knowledge and understanding in a particular area of expertise related to intercollegiate athletics.

Required Qualifications 


  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  2. Three or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in the areas of financial management, accounting, compliance and/or budgeting. 
  3. Three or more years of experience effectively managing professional and support staff.


  1. Excellent organizational skills to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines
  2. Demonstrated ability to understand and analyze a variety of numerical data sets (e.g. revenue and expense reports, workforce/salary reports, and budgets)
  3. Demonstrated skill in the research, development, and evaluation of policies and procedures related to fiscal administration
  4. Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present financial information
  5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse organization
  7. Ability to effectively use common computer application programs and related computer software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, database, internet)
  8. Demonstrated strong commitment to inclusion and diversity including but not limited to differences in ethnicity, national origin, race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification and ability
  9. Knowledge of NCAA policies, practices and financial accounting and reporting requirements

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Five or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in the area of financial management, accounting, and/or budgeting 
  2. Two (2) or more years experience working in Intercollegiate Athletics, particularly in budget planning and administration
  3. Experience managing staff in a collective bargaining environment
  4. Experience working with CFS (Common Financial Systems) at a California State University
  5. Master's degree in business, public administration, or a related field
  6. Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) / Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
