Position Summary
The Dean is the chief academic, fiscal, and administrative officer of the College, and reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs. We seek a person of vision with proven leadership skills. This person should be able to communicate effectively; set College priorities and policies; develop and manage College budgets; promote collaboration and cooperation among academic units; and work closely with students, faculty, staff and administrators to foster and sustain an environment of academic excellence through a strong commitment to teaching, research, scholarship, community service, and interdisciplinary endeavors. In addition, the Dean is expected to lead, support and ensure ongoing development of academic and administrative college initiatives tied to the College Strategic Plan; to facilitate and support efforts for external funding; and to promote relationships with alumni. The Dean should have a commitment to the College and University mission with a focus on diversity, equity and social justice, excellence in recruiting and retaining faculty and staff, and experience in building relationships with the community.
Position Information
ABOUT THE COLLEGE. One of six colleges at San Francisco State University (SF State), the College of Health and Social Sciences (CHSS) offers professional education in the health, human service, and social science disciplines. The College consists of the following academic units and associated institutes: Child & Adolescent Development; Clinical Laboratory Science; Family, Interiors, Nutrition & Apparel; Counseling; Criminal Justice Studies; Gerontology; Health Equities Institute; Holistic Health; Public Health; Kinesiology; Marian Wright Edelman Institute; Nursing; Physical Therapy; Public Administration; Recreation, Parks & Tourism; Sexuality Studies; Social Work; Sociology; and Urban Studies & Planning. The common goal of each of the College's various programs is to assist students in developing competence in professional practice and a commitment to social justice. This commitment to students produces graduates who continue to work effectively with professional programs to preserve and promote the well-being of individuals, groups, and communities. CHSS consists of approximately 102 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 92 lecturers and 29 staff members. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY. San Francisco State University is a large comprehensive urban university located in a vibrant and beautiful city with a rich intellectual and cultural life. Minimum Qualifications
Applicants for this position should have an earned doctorate from an accredited institution and possess an outstanding record of leadership and service to the campus and surrounding community. Candidates must have:
- Successful management and administrative experience of at least 5 years including managing budgets and personnel.
- A breadth of knowledge and experience in the varied disciplines of the College.
- Experience promoting and supporting academic excellence including teaching, research, and service.
- Demonstrated teaching, research, and service experience commensurate with being a full professor.
- Demonstrated knowledge of challenges and barriers for Black and Latinx/e students, faculty, and staff, and evidence of leadership in strategies employed to overcome such barriers.
- Training in and knowledge of historical and present-day structural racism, and evidence of anti-racist leadership strategies that support the success of Black and Latinx/e students, staff and faculty.
- Evidence of leadership and service that contributes to equity, opportunities, and inclusion in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
Applicants should possess strong leadership and vision that can bring stability as the college experiences changes in enrollment; experience in financial management especially in a shared governance environment; and dependable and transparent leadership skills with which they can lead initiatives, incorporating feedback throughout. Candidates for the position should also possess:
- Qualities of leadership and service that contribute to equity, opportunities, and inclusion in higher education. Should be adaptable and humble in communication, listening to the community in the college by acknowledging and building upon the strengths of our current staff and faculty and elevating others.
- Outstanding communication skills with an emphasis on listening.
- Ability to lead with compassion, being approachable, caring, resolving conflicts through dialogue, and emotionally in tune.
- Experience with collective bargaining and a demonstrated ability to fund-raise
COMPENSATION. The classification salary range is $215,000 to $227,000 annually. Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm).
