This is a fully remote position, with the incumbent working out of their own home. The incumbent must reside in the Los Angeles or San Diego area before the time of hire and while employed with the university. This position will require regular travel to provide outreach to the assigned area, within appropriate boundaries and city limits, as well as occasional travel to the Sacramento State campus.
Under the general supervision of the Senior Associate Director, the Admission Counselor regionally recruits students for University enrollment and represents Sacramento State (the University) at various educational and community programs, events and activities. The incumbent will act as the University liaison by providing resources to high school and community college counselors to update them about changes in admission policies, academic programs and general education. The position will be responsible for evaluating high school and college transcripts during peak periods. The Admission Counselor is responsible for planning, developing, coordinating and implementing University enrollment management and outreach programs to high school, middle schools and community colleges.
The incumbent also reviews a variety of official and unofficial transcripts and procedural and policy documents to determine transfer credit eligibility. The incumbent is also responsible for completion of the unofficial and official transfer evaluation at the time of admission for select colleges and makes some admissions decisions. The position requires extensive knowledge of Title 5 of California Administrative Code, Chancellor’s Office Policies and Regulations, National Accreditation Policies, and Campus Requirements relative to Admission, Advanced Standing Credit Award and Academic Credit Policies.
The incumbent will travel within the Los Angeles and San Diego area, with the flexibility to work remotely.
FLSA: Exempt (not eligible for overtime)
CSU Classification Salary Range: $ 5,025 - $ 7,159 per month
Hiring Range: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Knowledge and Abilities:
The following knowledge and abilities as well as those listed at the lower levels in the Student Services Professional series are required for appointment into this classification.
Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior. General knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of the Student Services field as well as general knowledge of the policies, procedures and practices of the program area to which assigned; general knowledge of individual counseling techniques; general knowledge, or the ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge, of the organizational procedures and activities of the specific campus to which the position is assigned. Working knowledge of student services programs outside the program to which immediately assigned.
Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; advise students individually and in groups on complex student‑related matters; determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations, analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals.
Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. One year in the program area to which assigned may be preferred but is not required.
A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
- Knowledge of student recruiting and marketing strategies.
- Ability to prepare reports, presentations and assist with preparing publications.
- Ability to independently prioritize, plan and organize work in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently and possess self-direction skills to be able to initiate plans, organize, prioritize, multi-task, and coordinate work in a fast-paced organization.
- Ability to understand, interpret and apply moderately complex rules, regulations, and procedures
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of staff, students, and external constituencies, both verbally and in writing.
- Skills and ability to use standard office equipment and standard software programs (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams), internet browsers and various online academic resources (i.e., CalStateApply, CollegeSource, Assist, etc.).
- Ability to work a flexible schedule
- Ability to travel with occasional overnight stays
- Ability to attend training programs on and off campus for occasional professional development
- Ability to work extended hours, and adjust working hours to meet special jobs.
- Ability to be called back periodically to perform work as needed.
Conditions of Employment:

- Knowledge of Freshman and Transfer Admission Requirements in the California State University System.
- Experience Using CMS (Common Management System) OnBase (document image management system) and TES (Transfer Evaluation System).
- Experience working with first generation and low income student populations.
