DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: 

The Ethnic Studies Department has been in existence for more than 50 years at Sacramento State. The Department is comprised of the following programs: Asian American Studies, Chicanx/Latinx Studies, General Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies, Pan African Studies, and Teachers in Urban Settings or Teachers in Bilingual Education. Ethnic Studies is a degree-granting interdisciplinary program offering course work in the study of the past and present histories, cultures, languages and issues that define ethnic group experiences in the United States. In addition to its teaching mission, the department is involved in research and community-based projects.

The Department of Ethnic Studies is housed in the College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies, consisting of 11 academic departments, three independent and interdisciplinary academic programs, and several centers and institutes. The College is a congenial and cohesive unit both academically and administratively. Our campus community represents the broad diversity of our state, and we believe that all are enriched and unified by this diversity. To this end, we are particularly interested in receiving applications from a broad spectrum of qualified individuals with the commitment and ability to work with our diverse student population, staff, and faculty.

POSITION DETAILS:

The Department of Ethnic Studies at California State University, Sacramento invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor positions beginning Fall 2025.

The Department seeks candidates with the preparedness to teach undergraduate Ethnic Studies courses including: ETHN 11: Introduction to Ethnic Studies (G.E. Area F); ETHN 100: Ethnic America; ETHN 53: Introduction to Native American Studies (G.E. Area F); and ETHN 140: Native American Experience.

Sacramento State, the Department of Ethnic Studies, and Native American Studies program are committed to Native American student success as demonstrated with new initiatives including the partnership with the California Tribal College (CTC), establishment of the Office of Tribal Affairs, and grand opening of the Esak’timá Center (Native American Student Success Center).

As a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and awardee of the Seal of Excelencia certification, Sacramento State is hiring a cohort of faculty who will support our commitment to Latinx/e student success during the 2024-25 tenure-track hiring cycle. We are looking for teacher/scholars who have an established commitment to teaching, research, and/or service in and with the Latinx/e community. Successful candidates will have demonstrated two or more of the four Latinx/e Student Success Cohort Hire criteria (see Required Qualifications below).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, Native American Studies/American Indian Studies, or a closely related discipline. J.D. (Juris Doctor), Ed.D. and ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by July 2025.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least two of the following areas: California Indian studies, historical and contemporary federal Indian/tribal law, tribal policy, tribal governance, and/or sovereignty (please state which fields in your cover letter).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in California Native people, communities, and Nations.
  • Demonstrated preparedness to teach courses in Native American Studies such as ETHN 53 (Introduction to Native American Studies) and ETHN 140 (Native American Experience).
  • Demonstrated preparedness to teach courses in general Ethnic Studies such as ETHN 11 (Introduction to Ethnic Studies) and ETHN 100 (Ethnic America).
  • Demonstrated an active research interest in Native American Studies/California Indian Studies/Ethnic Studies.
  • Demonstrated potential to build collaborative partnerships with California Indian and Native American communities.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating and working effectively with a diverse student population.

Latinx/e Student Success Cohort criteria (demonstrate two or more of the following):

  • Excellence in teaching Latinx/e students;
  • Effective service (e.g., advising, mentoring) to Latinx/e students;
  • Research, scholarship, and/or creative artistic expression focused on the Latinx/e community;
  • Knowledge (professional background and/or training experiences) that advances our institutional commitment to Latinx/e student success.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Specialization in one or more of the following areas: activism, cultural revitalization, criminalization, carceral studies, Native American rights, economic development, gender and sexuality, decolonization, and/or Native epistemologies or knowledges relating to tribal governance and justice.
  • Demonstrated experience as a teaching assistant, college/university lecturer, or professor in Native American Studies and/or Ethnic Studies.
  • Demonstrated preparedness to mentor underrepresented, first-generation college students.
  • Demonstrated preparedness to create and promote anti-racism in the curriculum and classroom.
  • Demonstrated interest in developing and teaching online/hybrid courses at the University level.

  • Teaching Philosophy: Explain how your teaching philosophy and pedagogy contribute to culture of community and diversity in the classroom (no more than one page).

  • Scholarly Research: Describe your research agenda and how it contributes to Native American Studies/Ethnic Studies (no more than two pages).

  • Sample course syllabi.

  • Teaching Effectiveness: Copies of Teaching and/or teaching assistant evaluations from all classes taught the previous five years (combine all files into one PDF for upload). If you do not have five years, please include all courses you have taught or been a TA.

  • Letters of Recommendation (three, confidential) may be required of finalists only.

OTHER SPECIFICS ABOUT THE POSITION:

The classification annual salary range for this position is $71,100 - $151,128; the anticipated annual starting salary is $76,884.
