Position Summary

The Sacramento State University Library seeks a creative and dynamic Staff member for one part-time appointment for the 2023/24 academic year. The appointment is expected to start October 2023 and end May 31, 2024. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Gerth Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) and will assist with accessioning and processing of archival collections; contribute to SCUA digital projects; and offer reference and research support; Training in archival theory and practices is required.
 
This is a term-limited, 20 hours/week position for the 2023/24 academic year.

FLSA: Non-exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

Anticipated Hiring Range: $1,776 per month - $2,000 per month (At Part-time)

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,551 per month - $ 6,402 per month

Department Information 

As the center of campus intellectual discovery, the Sacramento State University Library promotes teaching, learning, research, and scholarly communication at the University by integrating the library with student success programs and instruction. One of twenty-three libraries in the California State University System, the Sacramento State University Library holds over 1.4 million volumes, comprised of print and electronic monographs and serials, and is a U.S. Government Depository. The library’s mission is to inspire excellence in teaching, learning, and scholarly activities.

Minimum Qualifications 

In addition to Position Skill Level I requirements, work at this level typically requires the following range of skills:
  • Full proficiency in all technical aspects of work assignments including a thorough knowledge of functional area policies and procedures and applicable work methods.
  • Ability to interpret departmental policies and procedures and apply them accurately in performing work functions as well as the ability to evaluate procedures and recommend changes.
  • General knowledge of library collection organization and classification scheme and ability to interpret bibliographic forms and records.
  • Working knowledge of institution’s and library’s policies and practices associated with the ethical use of and access to library and on-line resources.
  • Basic knowledge of national standards and guidelines pertaining to libraries, including working knowledge of institution’s standards pertaining to copyright and intellectual property protection and the ability to source and apply such policies and standards to avoid potential violations.
  • Full proficiency in the use of automated library system(s) and subsystems(s) pertaining to functional area.
  • Ability to fully utilize standard and non-standard features of various on-line resources and standard desktop software packages, such as word processing and spreadsheets, to perform technical work or assist patrons.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and research skills to address standard and non-standard work problems.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision to perform assigned work.
  • Ability to work within a diverse environment and be service-oriented in working with patrons and other library staff, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within and outside the library.
  • Effective communication and interpretive skills to be able to assist in resolving patron problems and complaints, assess patron information needs, and orient and guide patrons in use of library resources.
  • Ability to effectively provide lead work direction and training to student workers and an understanding of employment and payroll procedures related to student workers.
These qualifications for entry to Position Skill Level II normally would be obtained through the completion of a high school education or equivalent certification plus two to three years of related library and/or clerical experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education

Required Qualifications 

Required: Must be comparable to the Minimum Qualifications, appropriate to the skill level of the position, and would allow an incumbent to satisfactorily perform the Essential Functions of the position.
  1. Ability to interpret overall library policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of library operations pertaining to Special Collections and University Archives.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge archival theory and practices, including experience accessioning, processing, and preserving manuscript/archival records.
  4. Experience or preparation in providing multimodal reference services for students, faculty, and the general public.
  5. Knowledge of external online databases, system and resources, including the ability to perform complex online searches.
  6. Ability to investigate and research complex problems, including analyzing and interpreting information.
  7. Strong organizational skills to perform workflows in assigned area.
  8. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to frequently move (e.g. lift, carry) library materials up to 40 lbs.
 
Conditions of Employment:
- Ability to pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Experience with project management.
  2. Knowledge of Archivists Toolkit, ArchivesSpace, or other archival data management system.
  3. Knowledge of DACS, MARC, and EAD encoding.
  4. Ability to be responsive to the needs of diverse communities and commitment to diversity and inclusion in the work environment.
  5. Experience supervising others.
