The incumbent in this position serves as Receptionist for the Chemistry Department. The incumbent must greet students and visitors to the Department Office, providing answers/information determined by university and department established procedures and policies; process all student add/drop petitions; answer large volume of inquiries over the phone or through email, assessing needs of callers and directing to appropriate person or department; schedule appointments for Dept. Chair; place orders with vendors, maintain and receive office supplies & other orders; place and remove departmental registration, key, advising and academic holds; maintain cooperative relationship with faculty, staff, students, and the community; back-up office staff when needed with their responsibilities; and other duties as needed or assigned.
FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)
Anticipated Hiring Range: $3,338 per month (Anticipated hiring range is at the minimum of the classification salary range)

The Department of Chemistry at Sacramento State offers an American Chemical Society approved BS Chemistry degree, a BS Biochemistry degree, BA degrees with concentrations in biochemistry and forensics, and master’s degrees in chemistry, including a biochemistry concentration. The department is undergoing rapid growth and currently has over 400 majors. Our degree programs include a strong focus on instrumentation and hands-on experiences. We place a high value on faculty mentored research for undergraduates and graduate students. Our graduates obtain industry and government jobs in chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology; complete MS/PhD programs in all areas of chemistry; complete professional health degrees in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and optometry; and teach in high schools/community colleges in the Sacramento region.

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures. Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.
These entry qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

6. Ability to provide lead work direction, training and guidance to student assistants
7. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

9. Ability to be organized and maintain effective records and files
