Position Summary

Under immediate supervision, the employee may be required to rotate among various assignments, including patrol and investigations.  The employee will respond to criminal, non-criminal, motor vehicle collisions, disturbances and emergency situations as assigned.  Conducts initial and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents.  Testifies in court as needed.  Patrols campus to prevent crimes.  May supervise police officers during the sergeant’s absence, and functions as the lead officer when requested by the shift sergeant.  Assures actions taken are legally and constitutionally correct.  When assigned, conducts criminal investigations and presents crime prevention programs i.e., certifications and standards required of police officers, including receiving and providing training.  May be assigned to Investigations by the Chief of Police.

FLSA: Non-Exempt - This position is covered by health benefits, and is non-exempt, (eligible for overtime compensation) according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. 

Anticipated Hiring Range:  Anticipated will not exceed current Step 10 ($7,176 monthly) unless salary schedule is modified by ratified collective bargaining agreement or policy

Work Hours: Varies; irregular shifts, to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Must be able to work any shift in a 24/7 schedule.

Minimum Qualifications 

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Valid California driver’s license.
  • Thorough knowledge of current law enforcement methods and procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
  • Thorough knowledge of effective investigative techniques and procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound judgments.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and direction to field personnel during assigned shift.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy and a Basic Course Certificate.
  •  Two or more years of active law enforcement experience

Pursuant to the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, the current Annual Security Report (ASR) is available for viewing at https://www.csus.edu/clery . 
The ASR contains the current security and safety-related policy statements, emergency preparedness and evacuation information, crime prevention and sexual assault prevention information, and drug and alcohol prevention programming. The ASR also contains statistics of Clery Act crimes for Sacramento State for the last three (3) calendar years. Paper copies are available upon request at the Police Service Center located in the University Union.
