Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Affairs Marketing and Communications, the Creative Design Artist (Graphic Designer II) is responsible for preparing layouts and materials and a level of creativity and ingenuity to develop graphic designs based on the goals and concepts of projects. This position will work with a variety of departments within the Division of Student Affairs to help meet the goals of the division by creating and sharing a cohesive brand across the departments. This position ensures ADA compliance in any graphic-related project within the division.

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for overtime compensation)

CSU Classification Salary Range: $ 3,977.00 - $ 7,197.00 Monthly

Hiring Range: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Minimum Qualifications 

Entry to the first level within this classification requires foundation knowledge in the principles and techniques of artistic and graphic design as well as demonstrated design and artistic skills. This knowledge and skill is normally  obtained through a college degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field or through technical experience and/or  relevant coursework. In addition, strong communication skills and the ability to use and maintain currency with applicable computer software packages and systems are essential to entering this classification.

Required Qualifications 

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree, relevant coursework, technical experience in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field to afford knowledge in the principles and techniques and demonstrated design and artistic skills.
  2. Demonstrated ability to prepare layouts and pre-press production of various publications and artwork for divisional projects such as slide presentations, newsletters, signs, flyers, brochures, directors, maps, posters, billboards, logos, exhibits/displays, and illustrations.
  3. Knowledge of graphic design principles and communication theory, including a basic understanding of marketing and promotional concepts, which is demonstrated through the presentation of a portfolio of prior work.
  4. Proficiency in graphic design and layout software such as or similar to Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Captivate, and Acrobat Pro.
  5. General knowledge of systems, techniques, and processes used in website design, photography, printmaking, content management systems (CMS), and applicable media.
  6. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and/or Office 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  7. Knowledge of copyright laws, especially relating to creative properties.
  8. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
  9. Ability to partner, collaborate and consult with internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  1. Thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broader range of technology, systems, and packages.
  2. Ability to independently handle multiple work unit priorities and projects.
  3. Ability to apply independently a wide variety of policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not exist.
  4. Ability to organize, plan, develop, and design marketing and promotional materials (e.g., flyers, brochures, surveys)
  5. Ability to work independently with very limited artistic direction.
  6. Ability to consult and communicate effectively with stakeholders and to interpret and translate their needs into effective visual formats.
  7. Ability to travel.
  8. Ability to pass a background check

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Experience working in an institution of higher education.
  2. Experience working within a brand book.
  3. Knowledge of style guides and how to apply policies and procedures regarding their use.
  4. Experience with marketing/communications campaigns.
  5. Knowledge of accessible technology standards.
