Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Director of Benefits Services, and in coordination with the Benefits Analysts, the Benefits Coordinator is the primary office receptionist.  The incumbent is responsible for answering and screening all incoming calls, opening and distributing mail, maintaining  office supplies and publications, and is the first point of contact for general benefits questions. Communicates basic policies and procedures according to the rules and guidelines of the CSU Benefits Program.  Responsible for benefits data entry, preparing benefits packets, correspondence and miscellaneous reports.  Reviews and maintains a variety of required legal documents for eligibility and verification.

FLSA: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime compensation under FLSA). This position is benefits-eligible.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,276 - $5,148 per month 

Hiring Range: Anticipated hiring range is typically near the minimum of the classification range, although commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

Department Information 

The Office of Human Resources supports the goals and objectives of the University through the development, implementation, and maintenance of human resource programs, policies, and processes which include the recruitment, development, and retention of diverse, competent, and talented professional and staff personnel. Our skilled staff is available to provide you with professional and timely information, advice and counsel in the areas of benefits, classification/compensation, recruitment, employee and labor relations, payroll, and learning & development.  The Benefits Office administers health benefits, retirement programs, disability leaves, and reasonable accommodations for all Sacramento State employees (faculty, staff, and management).

Minimum Qualifications 

Entry to this classification requires a fully functional knowledge  of and skill in standard office procedures and practices, as well as an ability to understand and operate in a variety of organizational structures.  Additionally, incumbents are expected to have a thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation and be able to clearly communicate orally and in writing.  Some positions may require a knowledge of business mathematics beyond basic arithmetic. The ability to use and quickly learn new office support technology systems and software packages is also a prerequisite.  These qualifications would normally be obtained through a high school program, technical/vocational program, or their equivalents combined with several years of related office work experience.

Required Qualifications 

1. Basic knowledge of and ability to follow standard office procedures (e.g. filing, maintaining of records, answering phone and transferring of voicemail messages).

2. Good written and oral communication skills to communicate effectively and tactfully.

3. Provide professional and service-oriented assistance to campus employees and departments.

4. Make appropriate work decisions by interpreting and applying collective bargaining agreement language, established policies and procedures.

5. Identify and solve standard problems and escalate complex problems to appropriate staff/management.

6. Ability to learn the operations, procedures, and requirements of the assigned work unit or program and effectively apply them with sound judgment in a variety of procedural situations.

7. Work independently, possess self-direction skills to be able to proactively organize work, set priorities, anticipate setbacks and follow through on the position responsibilities.

8. Organizational and time management skills to prioritize and multi task, meet goals and deadlines.

9. Perform a variety of clerical/administrative duties and data entry with speed and accuracy.

10. Work effectively to establish and maintain cooperative working relations with a diverse group of individuals.

11. Operate standard office equipment including but not limited to, computer, laptop, copier/scanner, fax machine, and printer.

12. Utilize common computer application programs and related computer software packages (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite and internet applications).

Preferred Qualifications 

13. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in business or public administration, human resources or closely related field.

14. Human Resources (HR) experience in an educational or public sector office environment and/or experience in Benefits, leaves management or closely related field.

15. Knowledge of HR software applications, such as PeopleSoft HR application.
