Position Summary

The program of intercollegiate athletics is organized and conducted as an integral part of the total educational program of the University. Academic excellence and athletic accomplishments go hand in hand at Sacramento State. There are three separate and unique missions in this program: to contribute to the educational objectives of the University; to provide a healthy, competitive athletic experience to individual student-athletes; to serve as a public relations vehicle within the community.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics offers both academic courses and an intercollegiate athletics program. Academic courses offer the opportunity for individuals to gain knowledge and understanding in a particular area of expertise related to intercollegiate athletics. Sacramento State has made a strong commitment to the achievement of national excellence at the NCAA Division I level. It also is committed to maintaining an equitable program between men and women.

The Athletics Media Relations department is responsible for promoting and publicizing the intercollegiate athletics program through written publications and other media. The department cultivates corporate sponsorships and develops corporate marketing packages. It represents the athletics program to the media and is responsible for advising intercollegiate athletes and coaches at press conferences or other events. The department also manages and coordinates electronic and print media to market sports events and promote events with student groups.

The incumbent to the Public Affairs Communication Specialist II position will work independently on a broad range of projects involving the execution of media relations, publications, marketing, and sports information programs within the department of Athletics Media Relations. This position assists in the promotion of Sacramento State athletics to the local and national media through a variety of sources. The incumbent will serve as the primary media contact for men's soccer, women's soccer, women's basketball and baseball. They will also work independently to promote their respective sports and assist coaches with media relations and marketing needs. Lastly, the incumbent will be expected to utilize sound judgement and problem-solving skills to resolve unexpected issues that may arise at the site of competition while completing facility set up and the production of the live video streaming of events.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,515 - $6,358 per month

Minimum Qualifications 

Entry to the first level within this classification requires knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, and/or some exposure to marketing and marketing research. This background normally is obtained through a college degree, which includes relevant coursework in the field, and up to two years of related professional or technical experience. In addition, strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles are essential to initial entry to this classification.

Required Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field with two years of related professional or technical experience in NCAA Division I athletics department or professional sports franchise. OR Associate’s degree in communications, marketing, or related field with four years of related professional or technical experience in NCAA Division I athletics department or professional sports franchise.
  2. Working knowledge of and ability to apply standard theories, practices, principles and techniques related to communications in media, marketing, and/or sports information areas.
  3. Thorough knowledge of and ability to use effectively, media outlets including planning media coverage and media publicity campaigns for the university and events.
  4. Ability to build and manage more sophisticated media contacts.
  5. Demonstrated ability to keep abreast of campus events and subject matter expertise in relation to current events to identify and capitalize on media opportunities that will promote the university and increase positive media coverage.
  6. Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media.
  7. Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles and formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals.
  8. Ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles.
  9. Strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages.
  10. Working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences.
  11. Ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to research sports information.
  12. Exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening and interpretive skills.
  13. Working knowledge of protocols and institutional etiquette related to public and media relations.
  14. Basic knowledge and understanding of media outlets including print, television, and radio. Ability to work with the media for the coverage of events.
  15. Ability to generate written content in a timely fashion for both press releases and web stories.
  16. Excellent customer service skills.
  17. Ability to use sound judgement problem solving skills to resolve unexpected problems that arise.
  18. Ability to effectively build and maintain working relationships with a high level of on-campus and off-campus community members with diverse interactive abilities.
  19. Proficiency with standard office equipment and in Microsoft Office Suite.
  20. Ability to complete assignments under strenuous deadlines with competing priorities.
  21. Ability to perform moderately-complex assignments related to writing and editing communication pieces, public affairs, media relations, marketing and related research, and sports information.
  22. Ability to work nights, weekends and travel from August through June.
  23. Possess valid driver’s license and maintenance of good driving record.
  24. Ability to pass background check.

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Working knowledge of Adobe inDesign and Photoshop as well as StatCrew software for soccer baseball and basketball.
  2. Experience maintaining statistical records for sports at an intercollegiate level.
