DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

Since 1952, Sac State has remained committed to training highly competent professionals in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology by providing the community with exceptional speech, language, swallowing and hearing services.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders continues this commitment by providing speech-language pathology and audiology services to our community through our on-campus clinic, the Maryjane Rees Language, Speech, and Hearing Center. The year 2022 marks our 70th anniversary of our Maryjane Rees Language, Speech and Hearing Center, consisting of a state-of-the-art speech-language-hearing clinic with over 20,000 square feet of clinical space, with an additional 6,000 square foot audiology clinic built in the summer of 2021. Our department is located in the same building as the clinic, Folsom Hall (7667 Folsom Blvd) which offers rich opportunities for interprofessional collaboration with departments across campus.

Our department offers the opportunity for collaborative working relationships with faculty and clinicians at local clinics, schools, and university medical centers. Through the campus-based clinic, graduate students evaluate and treat communication disorders under close supervision by faculty who are nationally certified and state licensed speech-language pathologists and audiologists. The Department offers the Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, the Second Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSAD2B-CCE), the Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders, and the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degrees.

POSITION DETAILS:

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders is seeking a Full-time Lecturer, to serve as the Clinic Director for the Maryjane Rees Language, Speech and Hearing Center, with a potential Spring 2022 start date.

This full-time, temporary, non-tenure-track appointment, which is not a probationary position, will be for a three (3) year term and will terminate at the end of the 2024/25 academic year, and does not establish consideration for subsequent appointments or any further appointment rights. However, this lectureship may be renewed annually dependent upon satisfactory performance, curricular needs, student enrollment and budget consideration.

JOB DUTIES:

  1. Coordinate scheduling of clinical instruction as well as clinics. Coordinate scheduling of all clinical instructors, clinics, and student clinicians in the Maryjane Rees Language, Speech, and Hearing Center.
  2. Participate in hiring and support of clinical instructors (Includes verification of updated ASHA certification and CA license annually.)
  3. Provide oversight of CALIPSO data tracking including verification of ASHA, licensure, and credential tracking.
  4. Provide support to students enrolled in clinical practical including tracking documentation related to undergraduate observation hours, background check documentation.
  5. Tracking of clinical assistantship hours, clinical clock hours and competencies, surveys and site demographics data, in order to ensure learning outcome assessment data for annual department reporting are available.
  6. Community relations including marketing and public relations to support clinic census.
  7. Support the development of sustainable funding sources, in collaboration with the Department Chair and University Advancement for the donations-only clinic.
  8. Establish, monitor and track the Maryjane Rees Language, Speech and Hearing Center budget in consultation with the Department Chair.
  9. Provide supplementary clinical instruction to students enrolled in clinical practicum assessing and remediating the following disorders (this list is not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive): Accent modification, Articulation, Augmentative/alternative communication (AAC), Autism Spectrum Disorders, Child Language Disorders, Communication Disorders, Counseling, Degenerative disorders, Developmental disorders and syndromes, Dysphagia, Fluency, Language and Literacy Development, Language disorders, Motor Speech Disorders, Neurogenic Language Disorders, Neurological disorders, Phonological disorders, Voice, Aural Rehabilitation, Central Auditory Processing disorders, and Hearing Screenings.
  10. Instruct students and guide clinical instructors in the following areas:
    1. Clinical diagnosis of speech, language and hearing status based on the administration of formal and informal tests, the evaluation and interpretation of test results, parent interviews, and case histories.
    2. Therapeutic intervention which involves the planning, implementation, and evaluation of remediation procedures with communication impairments such as articulatory disorders, delayed and/or deviant language development, stuttering, voice, aphasia, cerebral palsy, disorders of cleft palate, and disorders of speech and language resulting from a hearing impairment.
    3. Professional reports and records of evaluations planned therapeutic procedures, and results.
    4. Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) development, implementation, and tracking.
    5. Evidence-based practice and department specific professional development.
  11. Coordinate reception at clinic desk and clinical supply room, including materials, and personnel.
  12. Interact with clients and caregivers regarding services and concerns as needed.
  13. Establishing, monitoring, and updating student placement agreements for all offsite clinical internships.
  14. In collaboration with Graduate Coordinator, conduct biannual clinical orientations.
  15. Maintain Clinical Handbooks for students and clinical instructors.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:                                                                                                              

  • Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or equivalent from an institution approved by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispenser’s Board.
  • CCC from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
  • Minimum 9 months of clinical speech-language pathology work post- ASHA CCC.
  • Possession of or eligibility for California License in Speech-Language Pathology.
  • Ability or potential to provide supervision and/or lead work direction to others.
  • Ability or potential for strong organizational skills with the ability to coordinate scheduling.
  • Ability or potential in coordinating operational activities, such as development of sustainable funding sources, establishing, monitoring, and tracking budgets, and developing clinic handbooks.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with students, staff, and colleagues in a diverse academic community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with supervision/clinical instruction of speech-language pathology students.
  • Experience with scheduling clients and clinicians.
  • Experience with marketing and public relations.
  • Experience in providing service in multiple service delivery settings.
  • Experience in teaching at the university level.
  • Potential for establishing relationships with other agencies and community clinics.

    3. Possession California state licensure in Speech-Language Pathology or documentation showing eligibility for licensure (e.g., educational records signed/verified by program director and passed PRAXIS exam)
  7. Names and contact information of three professional references.
