Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Director, University Mail, and the Mail Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for the processing of all USPS and campus mail including the pick-up, sorting, delivery, metering and accounting of mail and packages.  The incumbent will operate the software and equipment necessary to process bulk mailings from list processing, bindery, addressing through delivery to Post Office, including electronic submission of the proper paperwork.  The incumbent must be able to prepare packages and media for shipping through various carriers and have the knowledge to complete these tasks appropriately. Will require learning and operating software systems unique to University Mail.

FLSA: Non-exempt

CSU Classification Salary Range: $2,912 - $4,461 per month 

Hiring Range:  $2912-$3299 per month

Minimum Qualifications 

Knowledge and Abilities:

General knowledge of office methods, supplies and equipment; working knowledge of current postage rates and shipping rules and regulations.  

Ability to accurately interpret and apply current postage rate charts and regulations; spell correctly; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and perform mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.  


One year of general office clerical work, stock clerk work or delivery service work. 

Prospective applicants who have not had the experience listed may be considered eligible based on other evidence of meeting the above minimum qualifications.

Required Qualifications 

1. Working knowledge of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) rates, rules and regulations
2. Ability to operate electric and gas-powered vehicles (e.g. to deliver and pick up mail)
3. Ability to sort and distribute mail
4. Good customer service skills with the ability to perform duties courteously and professionally
5. Demonstrated ability to be dependable, conscientious and trustworthy
6. Ability to work independently and with close supervision
7. California Class C Driver’s License and maintenance of a good driving record
Physical Requirement
8. Ability to frequently lift and carry mail-related items up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications 

9. Experience sorting and distributing mail.
10. Ability to maintain logs and complete paperwork as required by postal regulations and internal Sacramento State processes.
11. Ability to operate postage meters and postage software.
12. Experience in shipping packages and media through various entities, including but not limited to United States Postal Service, United Parcel Service and Federal Express.
13. Knowledge of system settings, limits and processing requirements for mail system postage machines.
14. Skilled in the use of mail processing equipment such as: addressing, inserting, tabbing and postage machines.
15. Skilled in the use of Intelligent Mail Barcodes(IMb), Intelligent Mail Parcel Barcodes(IMPb), commercial based pricing and full service automation mail processing.
