DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE SUMMARY:

The Division of Criminal Justice undergraduate program is one of the highest ranked academic programs at Sacramento State, it is the second largest major in the university, and has a modest-sized graduate program.  The Division provides education to approximately two-thousand majors and pre-majors (Expressed Interest), maintaining one of the most diverse student and faculty programs within the University.  The Division focuses on the development of professionals as well as educated citizenry to serve in leadership and administrative roles, in both the design and management of an effective, efficient, and complex criminal justice system.  The Division’s curriculum emphasizes ethical decision making and problem solving as applied to a broad-based criminal justice curriculum, with a vision of being “…a dynamic center for educating students to be future leaders with professional competencies and ethics, abilities and values that allow them to be productive and engaged members of a global society,” under the Hornet Honor Code: https://www.csus.edu/diversity-inclusion/_internal/_documents/honor-code1.pdf.

Our graduates are expected to demonstrate a firm understanding of the nature of crime and deviance, its impact on society, and society's response to criminal and deviant behavior under the principles of due process and rule of law.  Criminal Justice students must acquire command of a substantive body of knowledge about the operations and dynamics in the correctional system, the law and courts, police/public safety, as well as offenders, law enforcement, investigations, administration, and a wide-range of critical and contemporary criminal justice issues, including global issues in  criminology.  The Division is very engaged in the current campus priority for new action on anti-racism initatives through its series of workshops, seminars and trainings on racial justice, with many opportunities, activities and services to engage in anti-racist work in the broader community. The Division houses the Center for African Peace and Conflict Resolution (CAPCR), and the Law Enforcement Candidate Scholars (LECS) program, an undergraduate student certificate/mentoring program for those from underserved populations interested in going into law enforcement. The Division prepares leaders for local, state, federal, and global criminal justice services, and is guided by the following values:

JOB DUTIES:

This is a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning with the Fall 2022 semester.  Salary is dependent upon qualifications, academic preparation, record of research and peer reviewed publications, and professional experience.

This Policing/public safety or law enforcement position will include the following duties: (1) teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, (2) engaging in scholarly activities, (3) serving on division, college and university committees, (4) academic advising, (5) providing service to the community, (6) supervising undergraduate and Master's student research/thesis, (7) developing other undergraduate/ graduate courses in area of specialization as needed, (8) potential coordination/leadership of the LECS program, and (9) willingness to participate in off-campus teaching and distance and distributed education.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

The candidate should have an earned doctoral degree in criminal justice/criminology or closely related social science discipline (sociology, psychology, etc). ABDs may be considered however, ABD candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree no later than August 1, 2022, with evidence of the date of completion. A Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree is not sufficient for this position and will not be considered.

Teaching and Research Experience:

- Evidence of teaching and research in the area of policing/public safety including but not limited to scholarship on police administration and/or management, evidence-based policing, crime investigations/detection, police-citizen interactions and relations, community and/or global policing etc.

- Ability to teach in one or more additional criminal justice areas such as criminological theory, terrorism, advanced crime scene investigations, and research methods, at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

- Ability to utilize instructional technology in their teaching 

- Evidence of effective assessment strategies that support diverse learning outcomes and promote student success. 

- Research examining diverse populations is recognized and encouraged along with the

- Ability to teach and mentor a diverse student population.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Earned doctorate in criminal justice, criminology, administration of justice.

Teaching and Research Experience:

- Experience with committee work and advising in an academic setting; supervision of diverse graduate thesis topic work for a diverse graduate student population.

- Demonstrated interest in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population.

- A record of research with multiple publications and conference presentations in the area of policing/public safety or research focusing on diverse populations within criminal justice.

Professional Experience:

- Five years or more of past or current professional experience in policing/public safety.
